Marinus Link Project Launches Public Exhibitions for EIA

by Yuki

Marinus Link Pty Ltd (MLPL) has commenced public exhibitions of the environmental assessment documents required for its Marinus Link project. This includes the draft Commonwealth Environmental Impact Statement and the Victorian Environment Effects Statement (EIS/EES), along with the draft Planning Scheme Amendment (PSA). The documentation will be available for public viewing from May 31 to July 12, 2024.

Caroline Wykamp, Chief Executive Officer of MLPL, expressed satisfaction at reaching this milestone after years of engagement, surveys, and technical studies. “Providing this information to the community marks a significant achievement for us,” Wykamp stated. “Our dedication to environmental responsibility goes beyond mere rhetoric; it is a core principle at MLPL. The Marinus Link is crucial for our renewable energy future, and we aim to construct and operate it with minimal environmental impact. We believe our assessment documents substantiate this and invite the public to review them during the exhibition period.”

MLPL is organizing a series of drop-in sessions in Gippsland, Victoria, and the Burnie area in Tasmania to address questions and provide information on the documents, the approvals process, and submission guidelines. “These sessions are designed for our communities and landholders affected by the project,” Wykamp noted. “They will feature subject matter experts and easy-to-understand fact sheets to help with any questions or concerns.”

The combined EIS/EES documents aim to address both Commonwealth and Victorian matters, outlining potential impacts and strategies to avoid, minimize, or manage them. Additionally, the environmental and planning requirements under Tasmanian legislation will be assessed in two separate EISs, scheduled for public exhibition later in 2024.
