A significant diesel spill in Pond Inlet earlier this month has triggered a public safety advisory from the Nunavut government, urging residents and their pets to steer clear of the affected shoreline area.
According to a statement from the Department of Community and Government Services issued on Wednesday, the spill occurred near the Petroleum Products Division shore manifold area, close to Black Point Lodge and Ulaajuk Elementary School. The incident, discovered on June 11 around 7 p.m., is believed to have resulted from a ruptured connection in the pipeline.
“The leak was detected by an engineering firm contracted by the Petroleum Products Division,” the announcement noted. “By the time it was found, the flow of fuel had ceased as the affected segment of the pipeline had emptied.”
Approximately 7,000 litres of diesel fuel were spilled, with most of it entering the ocean, posing potential environmental risks.
The affected area, located within the proposed Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area, covers a vast 108,000 square kilometres and is recognized as one of the world’s most ecologically significant regions by Parks Canada.
In response to the spill, the pipeline has been secured to prevent further leakage, pending repairs. An environmental consultant has been tasked with developing a cleanup strategy, and regulatory agencies are overseeing the remedial efforts closely.
“The Petroleum Products Division is collaborating closely with regulatory authorities to monitor and manage the response to the spill,” the announcement assured.
Residents have been urged to promptly report any oil sheen observed on the water or near the shoreline to the Department of Environment.
