Greens Criticize Victorian Labor Government for Backing Fossil Fuels

by Yuki

The Victorian Greens have condemned the Labor government for promoting fossil fuels during a climate emergency, as new plans for offshore gas projects and a reversal on banning gas cooktops emerge. It indicates that Premier Daniel Andrews has excluded the electrification of existing gas cooktops from Victoria’s net zero roadmap and is proposing legislation to expand offshore gas ventures.

The Greens argue that these actions represent a disregard for climate science and increase the risk of health issues, such as asthma, associated with gas cooktops. Ellen Sandell, Leader of the Victorian Greens, accused the Premier of undermining climate efforts and catering to fossil fuel interests.

Sandell criticized the government’s stance: “It’s disappointing that the Labor Premier is yielding to fossil fuel corporations and their lobbyists. We are in the midst of a climate crisis exacerbated by fossil fuel use, yet Labor is pushing for more offshore gas projects. Following the record heat from last month, this approach only hinders progress towards net zero goals.”

She further criticized the government’s reversal on climate policy and urged a shift towards electric alternatives, which she claims are more cost-effective and environmentally friendly. “Australia already exports more gas than needed. Our focus should be on transitioning to cleaner, cheaper electric cooking and heating solutions,” Sandell added.
