TotalEnergies and Oil India Ltd Collaborate on Methane Emissions Detection

by Yuki

French energy giant TotalEnergies has entered into a cooperation agreement with state-owned Oil India Ltd (OIL) to carry out methane emissions detection and measurement campaigns at OIL’s sites across India. The collaboration will see the use of TotalEnergies’ innovative AUSEA technology, a dual-sensor gas analyzer mounted on a drone, designed to detect methane and carbon dioxide emissions while pinpointing their source.

The agreement follows OIL’s recent membership in the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC), a global initiative aimed at achieving net-zero operations by 2050. The OGDC also targets near-zero upstream methane emissions and zero routine flaring by 2030. As part of this commitment, members are expected to publicly measure and report their progress.

TotalEnergies, which co-chairs the OGDC, has made the AUSEA technology available to other signatories as an effective tool for addressing methane emissions. The AUSEA analyzer represents a major advancement in emissions detection, allowing access to hard-to-reach points in both onshore and offshore industrial facilities. The technology has been praised for its accuracy and ability to monitor emissions that traditional methods often miss.

“We are pleased to see OIL join the growing list of national companies using our AUSEA technology. This collaboration highlights the momentum of the OGDC and its focus on industrial best practices,” said Patrick Pouyanne, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies. “Today, AUSEA is deployed on every continent, contributing to the OGDC’s goal of reducing upstream methane emissions to near-zero by 2030.”

Ranjit Rath, Chairman and Managing Director of OIL, expressed his support for the initiative, emphasizing India’s commitment to global environmental goals. “By joining the OGDC, OIL reinforces our dedication to reducing emissions and highlights our commitment to sustainable energy practices,” Rath said.

OIL, India’s second-largest state-owned oil and gas exploration and production company, operates in diverse regions across the country, including Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, and offshore areas in the Andaman Sea, Kerala-Konkan, and KG shallow waters. The company’s net-zero strategy includes efforts to eliminate gas flaring, adopt cleaner energy solutions, invest in renewable energy projects, and leverage advanced technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
