Surge in Charcoal Usage as Nigerians Seek Affordable Cooking Alternatives

by Yuki

A notable shift towards charcoal as a preferred cooking fuel in Enugu, driven by its affordability amidst rising costs of other energy sources.

Grace Umeh, a charcoal vendor at Garki Market, reported that despite the price of charcoal increasing from ₦5,000 to ₦8,000 per sack, customer demand has surged. Umeh highlighted the cost efficiency of charcoal, explaining that an average family of five could spend over ₦20,000 monthly on kerosene, whereas a single sack of charcoal, costing ₦8,000, could last for two months.

Oby Okafor, a seller at Mayor Market, confirmed the trend, noting that families are purchasing charcoal in bulk due to the high prices of kerosene and other fuels. “We’ve been experiencing a profitable business in charcoal for some time now,” Okafor said.

Christiana Ozor, a dealer at Achara Layout, shared that the increase in demand has led her to sell more than two bags of charcoal daily. Buyers have echoed similar sentiments, appreciating the cost savings. Gilbert Nnamdi, a father of four, stated that using a new charcoal stove has significantly reduced his kerosene expenses. “With only ₦200 worth of charcoal, my wife can cook a pot of soup and rice for the family,” he said, praising the stove’s efficiency and minimal smoke output.

Another user, preferring anonymity, mentioned switching to charcoal after the kerosene price hike to ₦900. “I stopped using kerosene due to the price increase and my fear of using cooking gas,” she said.

Food vendors have also turned to charcoal as a more economical option. Ijeoma Dim, a restaurant owner, explained that the high costs of kerosene and cooking gas have made charcoal a popular alternative. Ofor Anyawu, another vendor, noted the brisk business charcoal sellers are experiencing due to the price surges in other cooking fuels.

Amidst this trend, Anyawu called on the government to ensure the affordability and availability of all cooking energy sources, emphasizing the need for relief during these economic challenges.

The shift towards charcoal underscores the economic pressures faced by Nigerians and highlights the necessity for accessible energy solutions.
