U.S. Densified Biomass Fuel Production and Sales Surge in March

by Yuki

In March, U.S. manufacturers of densified biomass fuels demonstrated robust production and sales figures, as reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). According to the latest Monthly Densified Biomass Fuels Report released in June, production totaled approximately 920,000 tons, closely matching sales which reached 880,000 tons during the same period.

The EIA’s data compilation involved 76 active manufacturers of densified biomass fuel, representing a combined annual production capacity of 13.17 million tons and a workforce equivalent to 2,443 full-time employees. Notably, the report excludes facilities with annual capacities below 10,000 tons, which submit data on an annual basis rather than monthly.

Key production details from the survey reveal that respondents acquired 1.49 million tons of raw biomass feedstock in March. Production output encompassed 131,404 tons of heating pellets and 790,327 tons of utility pellets.

Market insights highlighted significant domestic and international demand dynamics. Domestic sales of densified biomass fuel in March amounted to 59,354 tons, achieving an average price of $218.92 per ton. Meanwhile, exports surged to 828,225 tons, averaging $201.45 per ton.

Inventory levels showed a notable increase in premium/standard pellets, rising to 313,066 tons from 243,108 tons in February. Utility pellets also saw an uptick, reaching 544,217 tons in March compared to 519,990 tons the previous month.

Overall, total U.S. densified biomass fuel capacity stood at 13.26 million tons in March, with all reported capacity either operational or temporarily inactive. Geographically, capacity distribution included 1.97 million tons in the East, 10.5 million tons in the South, and 797,200 tons in the West, underlining regional production concentrations.

The comprehensive data provided by the EIA underscores the resilience and growth within the U.S. densified biomass fuel sector, reflecting robust production capabilities and dynamic market engagements.
