In recent developments at various fuel stations, a novel type of diesel known as HVO100, derived from recycled cooking oils, has emerged. The Automobile Club of Germany (ADAC) has conducted investigations revealing that the additional costs associated with this alternative fuel are significantly lower than initially anticipated.
HVO100, synthesized from used frying fats and similar oils, is currently priced with a modest premium over traditional diesel. According to ADAC’s findings, the price difference ranges approximately between 6 to 10 cents per liter, marking a favorable outcome at the lower end of earlier projections which ranged from 5 to 20 cents. Notably, HVO100 offers a superior carbon footprint compared to conventional diesel and is compatible with standard diesel engines.
ADAC views these results positively, indicating efforts from manufacturers to maintain competitive pricing for HVO100. The financial impact on consumers is projected to be minimal; for instance, a 10-cent increase per liter would translate to an additional monthly fuel cost of approximately 5.62 Euros for a typical VW Golf driver, totaling 97.87 Euros.
HVO100: Diesel Made from Plant-Based Sources
HVO100 represents a paraffinic diesel variant derived from sources like used cooking oil, boasting potential CO2 emission reductions of up to 90%.
However, concerns linger among skeptics regarding the availability of raw materials in Germany. The catering industry’s current utilization of used cooking oil for fuel production raises questions about scalability. Furthermore, the environmental benefits of HVO100 hinge on adherence to rigorous production standards.
In response, ADAC calls for greater transparency from oil companies regarding the sourcing and sustainability credentials of HVO, emphasizing the importance of verifiable production practices to ensure environmental integrity.
