In an unsettling incident early Wednesday morning, a police officer stationed at the residence of the president of the Supreme Court in Papagou, Athens, was injured when unidentified individuals launched petrol bombs at the guard post. The attack occurred around 12:45 a.m., resulting in injuries to the officer’s face and hand, necessitating immediate transfer to a nearby military hospital.
Additionally, the assault caused extensive damage, including the destruction of a patrol car parked outside. Firefighters were swiftly dispatched to extinguish the resulting flames, with eight responders mobilized to the scene.
As of Thursday morning, no arrests have been made in connection with the attack. Authorities have not clarified whether the assault specifically targeted the guard or the Supreme Court president, Ioanna Klapa. State Security has initiated a preliminary investigation into the incident.
Government officials promptly condemned the assault, emphasizing their commitment to upholding democratic institutions and ensuring the safety of judiciary personnel. “Our democracy and its fundamental institutions, such as the Judiciary, will not yield to intimidation,” stated government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis, while extending well wishes for the injured officer’s recovery.
This brazen attack underscores ongoing security concerns and the need for vigilance in safeguarding key public figures and institutions.
