The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) reassured President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians on Thursday that the armed forces will persist in their efforts to combat economic sabotage and crude oil theft. The aim is to ensure Nigeria meets and exceeds its oil production quotas set by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, reported noticeable improvements in crude oil production during July and August. Speaking at a biweekly press briefing, Buba emphasized that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) received directives from President Tinubu to enhance oil production to meet OPEC targets. He noted increased surveillance of pipeline infrastructure and heightened cooperation with the oil sector.
Buba also highlighted that the Joint Taskforce Operation Delta Safe is actively monitoring crude production metrics, which has contributed to the reported increase in oil output. He dismissed claims that the military had detained a protester in Abuja, advising that further inquiries should be directed to relevant security agencies.
Addressing recent protests, Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau of the military’s public relations office acknowledged varied public perceptions of protests, ranging from peaceful demonstrations to violent disruptions. He criticized the organizers for ignoring advice to cancel the protest due to potential threats of violence from subversive elements. Gusau lamented the damage to private businesses and public property and called for civilian support in the fight against violent crime, stressing the importance of credible intelligence in aiding military efforts against terrorism and criminal activity in Nigeria.
