In response to an escalating fuel crisis, the Manipur government has announced the deployment of police officers at petrol stations across the state. The initiative, revealed by L. Susindro, the state’s Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, is designed to mitigate the worsening fuel shortage and combat extortion at fuel pumps.
Susindro highlighted that several petrol stations have been forced to close due to financial losses stemming from customers leaving without paying for fuel. To address these issues and ensure uninterrupted service, the government will station police and staff from the Food and Public Distribution Department at petrol stations.
Susindro also issued a stern warning to fuel retailers, stating that legal action will be taken against those who refuse to sell fuel while maintaining adequate stock. “We have sufficient fuel supplies in the state. Petrol pump operators who withhold fuel despite having stock will face legal consequences,” he declared.
The current fuel crisis has been further aggravated by frequent landslides along national highways, which have disrupted the transportation of LPG cylinders to the state. This disruption has significantly contributed to the severe fuel shortage in the Imphal Valley.
