Greenpeace Protests Europe’s Continued Gas Imports by Blocking LNG Carrier in Belgium (3.27)

by Yuki

On Thursday, March 27, eight Greenpeace activists temporarily blocked an LNG carrier traveling from the U.S. to the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium. The protest, organized by Greenpeace Belgium, aimed to highlight Europe’s ongoing reliance on natural gas imports.

The activists, aboard the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise and inflatable boats, surrounded the Marshall Islands-flagged Marvel Swallow. They unfurled banners featuring images of Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, with the message “Their gas, your cash,” during the protest. The protestors positioned themselves dangerously close to the ship, risking their safety.

Greenpeace stated that the protest was meant to draw attention to how Europe’s dependence on gas fuels geopolitical instability and drives up energy costs for households.

Despite the protest, the Marvel Swallow was able to safely dock in Zeebrugge later that day.
